The location of the Mount Sinai described in the Bible remains disputed. The high point of the dispute was in the mid-nineteenth century. Mount Sinai is one of the most sacred locations in the Jewish , Christian and Islamic religions. The biblical account of the giving of the instructions and teachings of the Ten Commandments was given in the Book of Exodus , primarily between books , during which Sinai is mentioned by name twice, in Exodus ; In the story Sinai was enveloped in a cloud, it quaked and was filled with smoke, while lightning-flashes shot forth, and the roar of thunder mingled with the blasts of a trumpet; the account later adds that fire was seen burning at the summit of the mountain. The biblical description of God’s descent seems to be in conflict with the statement shortly after that God spoke to the Israelites from Heaven. Sinai is mentioned by name in ten other locations in the Torah : Exodus ; , Leviticus ; ; ; , Numbers ; ; and Deuteronomy Sinai was also mentioned once by name in the rest of the Hebrew Bible in Nehemiah According to the Documentary hypothesis , the name “Sinai” is only used in the Torah by the Jahwist and Priestly source , whereas Horeb is only used by the Elohist and Deuteronomist.

Abstract Upon learning that they must undergo surgery, children experience a range of emotions including fear, anger, guilt, and sadness. It has been demonstrated that children who are prepared for surgery and who have support throughout their hospitalization recover more quickly and have fewer emotional problems, such as separation anxiety and sleep disturbances, than those who are not prepared.
Pre-surgical preparation programs allow children and their families the opportunity to preview the hospital experience in a supportive environment to reduce anxiety, increase knowledge, and enhance coping.

Print this page When they reached a Mount Sinai, in present day Egypt, God spoke to Moses Most scholars date the beginning of Judaism as an organised and Thou shalt have no other gods before me; Thou shalt not make unto to have come out of one man’s meeting with his God in the desert.
What is most likely the earliest talmudic statement on the date of the revelation on Mount Sinai may be found in the talmudic tractate of Shabbat 86b. According to the calculations of the sages, the Jews left Egypt on Friday, the 15th of Nisan. The Torah was given on Saturday, the sixth of Sivan, which was the equivalent of the 50th day of the omer, the day on which Shavuot was permanently fixed in the Scriptures.
Rabbi Jose, a second century sage, offers a dissenting view. The author of Magen Avraham Orach Chayim points out that the seventh day of Sivan was the equivalent of the 51st day of the omer , one day after the fixed day of Shavuot. Consequently, Shavuot could not mark the anniversary of the Law. The first step in the development of Shavuot after the exile was the official establishment of the date of the revelation on Mount Sinai.
The date indicated by the ancient sages was the sixth of Sivan, which was accepted by the majority of rabbis. One of the first official rabbinic texts to connect the giving of the Torah with Shavuot was a passage in the Midrash [commentary], Exodus Rabbah, chapter 31, attributed to Rabbi Meir. An entire talmudic tractate, called Bikkurim, deals with the offerings of first fruits in the Temple. The Mishnah of Bikkurim states that the period for bringing the first fruits was any time from Shavuot to Sukkot.

Moses , Hebrew Moshe , flourished 14th—13th century bce , Hebrew prophet, teacher, and leader who, in the 13th century bce before the Common Era, or bc , delivered his people from Egyptian slavery. In the Covenant ceremony at Mt. Sinai , where the Ten Commandments were promulgated, he founded the religious community known as Israel. In the Judaic tradition, he is revered as the greatest prophet and teacher, and Judaism has sometimes loosely been called Mosaism, or the Mosaic faith, in Western Christendom.
His influence continues to be felt in the religious life, moral concerns, and social ethics of Western civilization, and therein lies his undying significance. Few historical figures have engendered such disparate interpretations as has Moses. Opposing this is the theory of the German scholar Martin Noth , who, while granting that Moses may have had something to do with the preparations for the conquest of Canaan , was very skeptical of the roles attributed to him by tradition.
Although recognizing a historical core beneath the Exodus and Sinai traditions, Noth believed that two different groups experienced these events and transmitted the stories independently of each other. This article, following the lead of the biblical archaeologist and historian W. Albright , presents a point of view that falls somewhere between these two extremes. While the essence of the biblical story narrated between Exodus and Deuteronomy is accepted, it is recognized that, during the centuries of oral and written transmission, the account acquired layers of accretions.
The reconstruction of the documentary sources of the Pentateuch by literary critics is considered valid, but the sources are viewed as varying versions of one series of events see biblical literature: The Torah [Law, Pentateuch, or Five Books of Moses]. Other critical methods studying the biblical text from the standpoint of literary form, oral tradition, style, redaction, and archaeology are equally valid.
The most accurate answer to a critical problem is therefore likely to come from the convergence of various lines of evidence.
